When I was a growing lad my mum would often say to me that I could eat for England, especially when I was tucking into a second helping of one of my favourite puddings.
On my bookshelf is a copy of Eating for England by Nigel Slater which is all about the food that we find in shops and kitchens such as custard, Dairylea, PG Tips, Marmite (which I don’t like) and many others.
Just as many of the delights mentioned can be termed comfort food I feel that this book is comfort reading. It’s at this time of year when it’s often dull and wet that I sofa fly with a cup of tea and a couple of biscuits to read it for a while. That both cheers me up and takes me down memory lane.

I too, have this book on my shelves,. although I haven’t read it yet – I have about fifty books waiting to be read, but I’m sure I will get through them all through the winter. p.s. I thoroughly enjoyed the John Harvey books you recommended, even though they were a little bit dated.
Elaine it’s an ideal winter read! Lucky you having fifty unread books.
I’ve now reread, and enjoyed, the first two Resnick novels and about to start the third. xx
I’ve never heard of this book, I shall look out for it.
Jo do that as it’s a delightful book to read, and which will make you smile and bring back some fond memories. xx
I have this book too. Also haven’t read it yet. I love Nigel Slater but only discovered him fairly recently so went a bit berserk buying all his books over a matter of weeks. I really enjoyed Toast though, and I think this is a bit similar in format isn’t it?
Donna it’s a popular book it seems, as indeed all his books are! As you enjoyed Toast I’m sure that you’ll also enjoy this one. xx
